ABOUT STAGE DIRECTIONS:

In Israel Horowitz's play about sibling alienation, three estranged adults return from the funeral of their parents to their childhood home. Having not spoken to one another for years, Horowitz uses spoken "stage directions" as a metaphor for their verbal impotence. EVERYTHING they say is in the form of a stage direction: "Richard crosses the room abruptly and stares at Ruth angrily". Robbed of dialogue, non-verbal moments (e.g., a lost look or desperate gesture) carry all of the psychological weight of the narrative. During this process, one came to grasp the power of silent film – a theatre of pure images expressing all that cannot be spoken.
