ABOUT SOUND OF A VOICE:

". . . the sound of a human voice, the simplest thing to find and the hardest to hold on to. . . " this poetic line of Hanako's reveals the heart of the play. She continues, "Kill me, but don't leave, even in death your spirit will remain here and comfort me". It is the tale of a witch and a samurai in the forest – loosely based on an ancient Japanese Noh play. In this lyrical work, an old crone, rumored to be a witch, imprisons her lovers in flower blossoms at night by transforming herself into a beautiful woman and seducing them.

Like a fairy tale, simple outlines contain deep truths. The challenge here was to anchor the overwhelming archetypal imagery and lush musical score to what is, at its core, a very simple human tale of loneliness. To that end, every dreamlike sequence was grounded and framed by what was not merely a naturalistic – but an extremely intimate – acting style in which a glance of the eye carries as much weight, if not more, than a thousand flower petals swirling in front of an iridescent pink screen.
