ABOUT TALLEY'S FOLLEY:

The challenge in staging this prequel to "The Fifth of July" is the misleadingly simple surface of the play. It is a romantic comedy set in an old boathouse on a 1930's summer night. Ideally, the play should be a breezy, lyrical homage to Chekhov.

The greatest challenge is for the actress playing "Sally" who must, for one hour and twenty minutes, find creative and believable ways to turn down her suitor's proposal before a joyous "Yes!". AND, she has to do this without leaving the stage and without the help of any other characters! Why doesn't she just get up and leave? This was the secret we needed to unearth in rehearsal. Ultimately her entire action, for over one hour and twenty minutes, became the formulation of one continuous thought . . . just as long as it might take in real life.
